A true abscess consists of bacteria growing inside a shell like covering called a rhine. Drainage with removal of this rhine prevents recurrence. Antibiotics may slow the growth of an abscess, if the germ is sensitive to the drug. However, they seldom penetrate deep enough to kill all the germs. If it drains spontaneously, it will likely recur. Wait or not is up to you.
