A member asked:

Under what conditions would a beta-amyloid plaque pet scan be recommended?

Beta amyloid is a normal protein that plays a role in neural development in the brain, but a damaged form leads to eventual dementia. Thus this test is used in the evaluation of people with concerns about cognitive loss, present or future in some cases. Dementia.may not necessarily be present when amyloid plaques are found in the brain and may predate Alzheimer's disease by months or years.

Insurance most often will cover the expense of this study if there is a compelling need to distinguish Alzheimer's disease from Fronto-Temporal Dementia.
