A member asked:

How common is it for a doctor to refer a patient for speech therapy for swallowing problems if the patient has not complained of swallowing problems and never displayed them?

A speech therapist can help with swallowing so that’s not unusual. But, if the person is not having difficulty swallowing, then there would be no reason to send the person for therapy for swallowing. Is it possible a test of swallowing revealed an issue? If so, a speech therapist may be able to help get the swallowing ability better. Perhaps ask the doctor directly why this was ordered. Good luck!

Common for patients in the hospital admitted with aspiration pneumonia or following a stroke among others in trying to determine if it remains safe to eat and drink a regular consistency diet.
