Male in mid-twenties, bun 25 mg/dl, anion gap 3, estimated gfr 80 ml/min/1.73m2. could a high protein diet or exercise cause these numbers? is my kidney damage or not working right? what can cause this?

You do have a reduced kidney filtering function. Your PCP is very likely to refer you to a nephrologist to expedite the diagnostic process and to start a proper treatment if needed.
