Almost everybody acquires genital HPV within their first few sex partners, and once infected, HPV may persist indefinitely in latent (inactive) form. It can later reactivate, the usual reason for an abnormal Pap in a committed relationship. It does not imply either you or your partner has recently had sex with anyone else.
