Lysine has been promoted for years to treat herpes infections, but research shows no benefit at all. It will not reduce the frequency of severity of oral herpes (cold sores). Daily valacyclovir can prevent outbreaks if they are frequent; or if not too common, at earliest sign of an outbreak, you can stop it immediately with a single large dose of valacyclovir.
