How to deal with dog bite?

Treatment: I usually recommend a short course of antibiotics for dog bites if there is a penetrated wound, and offer tdap vaccine if you are not up to date (for tetanus).

Depends where: Dog bits on hands or face generally require antibiotic (amoxacillin/clavulonate) Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a good choice. Elsewhere, clean the wound, tentanus shot and be sure the dog had its rabies vaccine.

Where?: Where on the body? - if on hand or face we usually recommend a course of antibiotic (augmentin). If elsewhere on the body the risks of side effects from antibiotics are considered higher than the risk of infection. Ensure you clean the wound with lots of clean, running tap water. Where in the world? If you are somewhere that rabies is endemic then you need to ensure your vaccine is up to date.

Dog bite: Wash wound immediately and see your doctor immediately. Certain countries have rabies and depending on immunisation status , site of injury , kind of wound further management would be decided .

See doctor: Needs assessment of wound and depth and most countries the guidelines would suggest antibiotics. Need to also make sure you are not at risk of tetanus and may need a vaccination if you are - again different countries have different rules. Some countries also have rabies so the risk of this needs to be considered. Please see doctor to sort through all these things.
