A member asked:

What causes low alkaline phosphatase on blood tests? i got 44 on a scale of 46-116 u/l. sometimes my alk phos is in range and sometimes it's not but it seems to be consistently in the low range. my dr didn't say anything about it?

Low means good. The cited low end number from the lab is just a population normal. High numbers reflect damage to tissue that spills these proteins into the bloodstream. We don't treat normal and anything below the population expected low level is good.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your result is not a cause for concern, not even a little bit concern. Wish you good health!

A low alkaline phosphatase is of no clinical concern. It only matters if it is elevated. That is why your doctor did not comment on it. Good luck.
