A painful tooth is frequently caused by infection(probably an abscess as you have mentioned). It does require urgent treatment by your dentist. If you call him/her you can ask for prescription for Pain medicine and they will often prescribe an antibiotic for the infection. All this can not wait for 2 weeks...so you must speak to the Dentist directly and not be satisfied by talking to the reception

If the tooth is abscessed you need an antibiotic to help control the swelling and pain. Unfortunately this issue may not be able to wait two weeks. Try to get an emergency appointment for an earlier date.

Most common cause of Dental Pain isninfenction. You will probably need antibiotic for infection control, but it will not cure. If your Dentist cannot see you expeditiously, consider seeing a different General Dentist or a root canal specialist Endodontist.
