Palpitations can be forceful but not painful. However any pain can provoke increased heart rate & palpitations. To determine what your heart rate & rhythm is during symptoms, you'd have to have an EKG while symptoms are actually occurring, but wearing an outpatient heart monitor is best to see what the heart action is when you note palpitations or chest discomfort as you go about daily activities.
