In the US, trimethoprim is not routinely available except in combination, i.e. with sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim®). Sulfa-trimethoprim can inhibit or cure gonorrhea and chlamydial infection, possibly making test results negative. Usually this means the infection is gone, but on some occasions it might make the test falsely negative in someone who actually still has active infection.
