A member asked:

My mother, 82 with dementia, has begun chewing her 100 mcg levothyroxine pill instead of swallowing it whole. takes for hypothyroidism in morning 1/2 hour before breakfast. is it safe that she chews it? can it be taken at bedtime when she's clearer?

Best to mix with her food. Discuss strategies with her doctor. This is challenging but can be solved. Time of day and methods of ingestion will need more supervision

A senile person who choses to chew & not ingest whole her meds for hypothyroidism & thyroid medication replacement. The quandary is easily solved by TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) values measured at 2-3 month intervals. If TSH, a sensitive feedback loop biochemical, does not significantly increase after 2-3 blood monitorings, then the way the med is taken is moot; my own “gestimation.”
