It could be serious; however it is more important to pay attention to what happened before you woke up like were you having a nightmare and pay attention to the nature of your dreams.

Might be sleep apnea type of disorder. I would be useful if someone had ability to observe you sleeping and report if you have snoring. A sleep study by a sleep study doctor could provide further insight. Blood tests should include measurement of Magnesium.
