Protonix or pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor best taken 30-60 minutes prior to a meal to reduce stomach acid production. I tell my patients to take it before largest meal or the meal that has the worst symptoms. Carafate or sucralfate is a viscous solution that coats and protects GI lining from acid. Must be taken on empty stomach and 30 minutes apart from antacids, 2 hrs from other pills
