Bells treatment: Unfortuantely, there's no good information on this one. We give people with bells Prednisone (and usually an anti-viral pill) because we hope it will help, but this condition usually takes the time it wants to take to get better. You'll find a lot of contradictory information in the literature. However, 9 times out of 10, I do prescribe steroids. Depending on your health, maybe a higher dose?

Variable: Bells palsy is due to compression of the facial nerve in its narrow canal leaving the inside of the skull to the face. Depending upon the degree of swelling felt due to viral infection of the nerve, the recovery is variable. Prednisone can cut down the swelling and limit the damage, but Prednisone cannot get to a compressed nerve. We usually give six months for best recovery.
