Splenectomy: The spleen can act in a protective manner to remove bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens that have been bound by protective antibodies. Unfortunately, sometimes antibodies bind to the blood cells called platelets. When this happens, the spleen can inappropriately remove (destroys) platelets. Platelets are inportant to blood clotting and low numbers can be dangerous.
