Good afternoon doctors. can potassium levels unexpectedly increase from drinking alcohol (on a cruise ship) and/or from bring dehydrated? my potassium was 5.3 on the cruise ship, and i was consuming alcohol and i think that i may have been dehydrated?

Why was the test done? Usually potassium is measured along with other elctrolytes (sodium, chloride, bicarbonate) and kidney function (BUN, creatinine). If these are normal and you are feeling well, probably all is OK, but it would make sense to repeat the test, ideally when you are well hydrated, like after a day or substantial non-alchohol fluid intake. Check w/ the ship's medical office.
