A member asked:

When do you use immunofixation protein electrophoresis instead of regular serum protein electrophoresis ? is it more informative ? what about serum immunoglobulins?

Certain low levels of globulins can be missed by electrophoreses hence the immunofixation method is used to detect them.

Immunofixation electrophoresis is more sensitive and specific for detecting monoclonal immunoglobulins. Not all monoclonal immunoglobulins are dangerous and the results need to interpreted in the clinical context.
