What can a pregnant woman take that will help with constipation without harming the baby?

Constipation is common during pregnancy. Having less than three bowel movements a week is pregnancy constipation and uncomfortable. Use stool softeners such as Colace or Surfak , they moisten the stool and make it easer to pass.

Increasing dietary fiber and fluids or using bulk-forming laxatives like psyllium seed (eg, Metamucil) and methylcellulose are the preferred treatments For refractory cases, occasional use of magnesium hydroxide, lactulose, or bisacodyl is probably not harmful. Try a cereal called "Uncle Sam" available in most supermarkets. If you eat a bowl every morning you will never be constipated again.
