They are both used to prevent platelets sticking to each other, i.e. prevent clotting, but they are not the same type. Usually, we replace ASA 325 mg with 75 mg of plavix. In some cases, we use 2 medications together because the different ways each medication has effect in platelet aggregation.

Plavix and aspirin are NOT the same class of medications and have disparate mechanisms of action. Do discuss your particulars with your regular physician to better comprehend why this has been proposed.
