You can only contract Rabies thru broken skin, the virus can enter the nose, eyes and mouth if one has broken membranes or if one has abrasions or scratches. Other contacts could be from petting an infected animal, or from their saliva, feces, or urine. These are rare, but most, if not all contacts are from a bite of an infected animal. Squirrels, rabbits, rats, mice, gerbils, carry no virus.

You do not need the rabies vaccination. Unless you were bitten or had some kind of physical contact, if you are okay.
