Five days metronidazole usually is sufficient; if your symptoms have cleared up, you do not need more treatment and can resume sex at any time. However, just having unprotected sex can lead to repeat or continuing bacterial vaginosis. It would be best to avoid sex entirely or to have sex only with condoms for the next few weeks.
