Subungual hematoma: When running if the shoes are either too tight or loose, subungual hematoma occurs due to nail trauma. There's micro or blunt trauma to the end of the nail, it gets pushed back into the nail base right into the skin that overlies it, causing bleeding to occur under the nail plate. It's usually painful for 1 or 2 days. They self resolve in a few months. It's cosmetic. Wear good fitting shoes.

Runners Nail: Most likely you have or had a subungual hematoma. If fresh it can be drained but usually it will go out with the nail or the nail will come loose and fall off with a new nail to grow in its place. Make sure your shoe has high toe box to help prevent it but is extremely common in runners.
