Can you get sepsis from untreated strep throat?

Strep A pharyngitis is usually limited to the superficial tissues of the upper airway but occasionally involves other areas in the digestive tract down to the anus. I have never seen or read of a case that progressed to sepsis. We never say never in medicine. The main issues are the 1/200 risk of heart/kidney or brain side effects if untreated and continuous spread to others.

Untreated Strep throat is not likely to cause sepsis, however, post-streptococcal infections result in kidney and heart disease. Therefore it is imperative that the infection be treated to prevent these complications. Wish you good health!
