My back pain does not have anything to do with my spine, but is muscle related only. i have had it for 1.5 years and it will not go away. is there a way i can ever heal this? i have done physical therapy, but it has not really helped. thank you?

I am an avid weightlifter for 28-years. I was just diagnosed with a Left Side Intercostal Muscle Strain. The pain is tremendous. It is day 7 of this pain. Any advice on medicine and/or physical therapy that I can do at home to help heal the injury?
Back pain L4/5 bulging discs, physical therapy doesn't help, but sitting on large excercise ball helps. Can i strengthen back/core muscles this way?
