Severe nose bleed, usually posterior bleeding, needs to be packed and underlying risk factors should be ruled out if it is a recurrent problem. Bleeding from the anterior septum is easily controlled with local pressure (pinch nose and breath by mouth) for at least 5 minutes when leaning your head forward slightly. Cauterization by an ENT doc may be required for heavy, recurrent nosebleed.
