A member asked:

Platelets were 485 last month and now they are 535. keep increasing. they have been high and increasing for around 1 year. doctor thinks its from my periods as on lower end of iron but not anemic. long heavy periods. how high before i develop clots?

Dr. Jay Park answered

Your modest increase of platelet count is probably related to low iron level. Unless you have hyper coagulable conditions, e.g., deficiency of Protein C and S, presence of factor V Leiden or antiphospholipid antibody, platelets count less than 1 million/mL alone is unlikely to cause clots (arterial or venous thrombosis).
