Oral may be slightly more accurate. Forehead skin temperature generally is about one degree lower than oral, but more variable. If your doctor has advised you to monitor your temperature, stick with one method or the other; or at least make sure you record the method each time you take your temperature. This amount of temperature variation is entirely normal in healthy people; you have no fever.

A chest image and pulmonary function testing may be helpful in determining the next step in your management, if autoimmune disease is possible. Lab testing may be repeated and there are numerous autoimmune studies to establish the diagnosis. Watch for signs of rash, joint pain and swelling. The oral thermometer is usually more accurate.
