Tingling lips and no thyroid....is my calcium too low? what are the dangers of super low calcium?

Tetany: Hypocalcemia can lead to tetany/cardiac arrythemia and death. If you've had a recent total thyroidectomy and you are experiencing tingling lips/finger tips/twitching of muscles - get to the er asap. You can drink some calcium fortified orange juice and take some Tums (calcium carbonate) as well... But get seen asap.

Low calcium: Agree with de. Melder. Low calcium can occur after a thyroidectomy. It can be very dangerous. If you are having tingling around the lip, you most likely have low calcium. Call the surgeon office, let them know your symptoms. They will tell you what to do and possibly send you to the er. You need calcium replacement but sometimes you might need something more potent like an active form of vitamin d.

Parathyroid glands : One of the risks of surgical thyroidectomy is loss of parathyroid glands inadvertently. If yours were taken out, you'd know pretty quickly. Tingling in hands and feet, muscle spasms, seizures, irregular heart beat are some of the symptoms of low calcium. If you have any reason to suspect you have low calcium please see your doctor right away.

Low calcium: Tingling or hypoesthesia of the fingers, nose, toes, and or lips is a sign of low calcium. This can also be accompanied by leg and loot cramps, especially at night. This can be temporary 10-30% of the time after total thyroidectomy and permanent 1-3% of the time. Can be treated with calcium, rocaltrol, (calcitriol) and or rarely Natpara. You should have labs drawn that examines calcium and related levels.
