Vertigo, as contrasted with dizziness, is a sensation of intrinsic spinning or whirling of the body and/ or spinning of one's surroundings. Lightheadedness, faintness, spaciness, and unsteadiness would not fulfill the description of vertigo. The etiology of vertigo can vary from central causes, such as the brain, to peripheral causes such as the inner ear.
