There's no cure for genital herpes, however, treatment with prescription antiviral medication such as Acyclovir may: Lessen the severity and duration of symptoms in recurrent outbreaks; reduce the frequency of recurrence; and minimize the chance of transmitting the herpes virus to another.

Probably you have HSV2, in which case there is always some risk of transmission to a partner by vaginal or anal sex. The chance is low for any single exposure (if no outbreak at the time), but still all partners must be informed. If HSV1, transmission risk is low and less important to inform. Antiviral treatment (e.g. valacyclovir) reduces but does not eliminate HSV2 transmission.
