Loved one has schizophrenia very obviously to us now for the past year. the signs started about 5/6 years ago in hindsight. he got hit by a car (nothing major) and banged head 8 years ago. is it possible that this and another life event triggered?

Head injuries, either superficial or those resulting in brain injury, do NOT cause schizophrenia or any progressive psychiatric disease, but emotional responses to trauma are not unexpected. Have a psychiatrist follow your relative, and institute appropriate therapy.
