A simple chemistry blood test, chem 7 or SMA7 or renal panel, can tell you the kidney function. However, people may have kidney problem but kidney function is still normal by blood test. To completely rule out any kidney problems, a renal panel + a formal urinalysis + kidney ultrasound are required. Give example: people born with one kidney still have normal kidney function and normal urinalysis.

The two key tests for kidney function are serum level of creatinine and testing urine for protein.
