A member asked:

In the uk the normal levels for platelet in blood tests is 150-400 10^ 9l. mine have been above 400 this year. and keeps increasing. my results this week are 468. i read this can be a sign of cancer. also that you can develop blood clots from this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, iron deficiency is a common cause of elevated platelet counts and it is common in young women. Take oral iron and multivitamins and retest in 3-6 months. Wish you good health!
