Self treatment is : Not a good idea. More than cholesterol needs to be examined and treatment tailored to the abnormalities. Niacin is not without side effects. Please consult your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation and long term treatment.

Would not combine.: I would not combine Niacin with a traditional high cholesterol medicine, as they can both have toxic effects to the liver, and the combination can potentially amplify this risk. If you want to stop the medication you're taking and start Niacin instead, that would be fine as long as you numbers on blood testing are up to snuff.
