The bacteria in plaque causes a acid build up from the sugar in the food and can cause cavities. If the plaque is not removed, calculus will form causing bone loss and gum disease[periodontal disease] and possible loss of teeth.

There are hundreds of different types of bacteria living in our mouths in numbers in the millions. Some layer in specific order and convert foo debris int acids which make holes (cavities) in teeth. Others produce the same digestive enzymes that your stomach produces, causing dam age to the gums and bone around the teeth. Any infection can get out of hand, causing serious dam age to other organs.
