Is mild cognitive impairment the same as dementia?

Both have cognitive impairment , but in mild cognitive impairment , only one function or domain is affected while in dementia more than one function is affected . Generally we talk about 5 important functions which include learning and memory , visuospatial, language, executive , psychomotor .The neurologist uses a patient history , tests, studies and questionnaires to assess these functions.

Mild cognitive impairment may be the initial presentation of dementia, but does not always develop in 10% of people. Typically memory loss, amnestic MCI, leads to Alzheimer's, but problems with executive function, language issues, or trouble with calculations may lead to other types of dementia.
