Good question. When the HPV vaccines were new, it was believed they only prevented new infection and have no effect on existing HPV. More recent research shows somewhat reduced risk of reactivated infection and perhaps lower speed of progression of abnormal cell changes toward cancer (in women only). These benefits are modest; usually it's not worth getting vaccinated for these reasons alone.
