Confirming the cause of prostatitis often is difficult or impossible by urologists or any other specialist. Often antibiotics are tried without knowing for sure. If it works, bacterial prostatitis usually is considered likely; if not, it suggests bacteria are not involved. Happily, the large majority of such prostatitis is harmless -- an issue of comfort, not a serious health problem.
