By UPTODATE: routine prophylactic treatment of DME that is not associated with impaired visual acuity is not recommended. For such patients, treatment can be individualized (observation versus active therapy) with shared decision-making between clinician and patient. Observation is appropriate for asymptomatic patients with center-involving DME and visual acuity of 20/25 or better.
