A member asked:

Very good afternoon doctors. is the likelihood of urinary incontinence the same after a robotic prostatectomy as it is after a radical regular prostatectomy? how soon after a robotic prostatectomy can urinary continence possibly return to normal?

Any surgical approach for "prostatectomy" can result in urinary incontinence, by alteration of the acute angel between the penile urethra and the bladder. You urologist will provide post-operative guidance for correction.

Urinary incontinence can develop after both procedures and depends on the findings at time of surgery and the what was done to the area nerves. Robot and 'egular' are just approaches to the actual surgery. In most cases continence returns within one year.
