People are immune to new infections with the same type of HSV they already have, so auto-inoculation (self transference of herpes from one body site to another) occurs almost entirely during initial herpes, rarely with recurrent outbreaks. Don't push your luck -- wash hands after toilet before touching face. But there is little or no risk if you forget, nothing to worry about.

I am under the impression that touching an eruption of herpes 2 & then touching another part of the body can spread the virus there. Either way, as has been mentioned, be careful when you have eruptions.
