A member asked:

I'm 46 w. low iron, low ferritin, low saturation. (hgb ok) due to heavy periods from fibroids. levels are increasing by taking 150mg per day elemental iron. can i continue this amt for years to keep iron stable until menopause or can it be damaging?

Taking iron to make up for the lost element in menstruation is okay and will not do harm. Take multivitamins to facilitate blood formation. However, you may wish to consult gynecologist as there may be a treatment for the excessive blood loss. Wish you good health.

You should have the primary cause of your problem treated to avoid having to take iron for a long time so you wont have to worry about it.
