A member asked:

Recently diagnosed with familial hypertension and was put on amlodipine. would a better option had been an ace inhibitor instead of a ccb since they are kidney protective?otherwise healthy in good shape. was just wondering about the science behind it?

Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, is the most commonly prescribed antihypertensive medication in the world and is a great first line choice. It is kidney protective, especially in diabetics. it also retains balances the potassium loss if a diuretic is later added. Amlodipine,a calcium channel blocker, is also a good first line choice. Both meds are effective vasodilators which is how they lower BP

familial hypertension is not the best term as some are do to specific genes and require specific therapy. Guidelines always recommend trying the DASH eating plan first. It if works lowers BP in 2 weeks. Ask you Dr why they did not recommend this first. Next diuretics are usually recommended as first step. You did not give your ethnicity. In general ACEs don't work in those of African descent.
