The VB strain of HIV is not new: it has been circulating in persons at high risk (especially men who have sex with men) for at least 20-30 years. Second, it is no more easily transmitted than other types of HPV. The recent research report, which has been in the news, shows the VB strain is more virulent -- i.e. more rapid progression to AIDS -- but not new or any more easily transmitted.
