See answer: You can be contaminated by all sorts of things, such as chemicals, virus's, bacteria; and may not necessarily need treatment. An infection is when your body comes in contact w/ something may it be bacteria or virus's and for whatever reason is unable to fight it off. Some authorities describe the difference between the amount of "colonized" organisms and ultimately the need for treatment.
