A member asked:

Are most people who end up having shunts for intracranial hypertension, overweight? if yes, are most of these patients shunted to save eyesight? my eyesight is ok with diamox. but i'm 85kg and my pressures are high and symptoms are bad?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Decision for intracranial shunt is complex. If pressure cannot be controlled with meds, this may be the best approach to preserve vision, and provide stabilization. Weight reduction likely helps, but typically modest improvement. Diamox is commonly used, but glycerol in form of Osmoglyn, may be an additional tool.
