A member asked:

Which dental restoration has the same lifetime as natural tooth if proper care is taken?

Virtually none: There is absolutely no substitute for replacing what god gave you! all dental restorations will have increased longevity with proper care and maintenance. The success of all dental restorations is contigent on provider skill, oral hygeine and wear. If your question is technical, then gold is the closest material used that resembles the hardness of enamel and displays similar wear properties.

Many: Almost all dental restorations will last for thousands of years. Lasting in the tooth for a significant part of your lifetime is another story. Commonly, gold and amalgam seem to be the winners here.

None: Man made materials are great but can't compare to natural teeth. They wear, chip, fracture, etc. They also have margins that abut against natural teeth that are susceptible to breakdown over time. In a mouth w perfect home care and professional maintainence, they can last a long time, but not forever!

Cerec ceramics.: Natural teeth are, without question, the best, but when they break or decay, what's the best material to restore them with? In my opinion, (and opinions vary depending on experience and training) cad/cam ceramics bonded to the teeth are the best and longest lasting restorations. Cerec is the best cad/cam out there (my opinion, again).

None: Many things to consider. Wear factors against the opposing teeth or restorations is critical. Zirconia crowns are said to be indestructible, but are still subject like all others to bond/cement integrity. also, what about wear against the other teeth -- more research coming in. Still one of best is gold restoration on all counts except esthetics. Good Luck.
