Why do they say wash hands & don't touch your face? obviously, they must believe that virus can be on objects, etc., as why else would we have to wash our hands, etc?

The risk of catching COVID by contact with the environment or other people by hand contact (then touching the eyes or mouth) is believed to be very low, but probably not zero. It's just common sense: better safe than sorry.
