A member asked:

What role can n-acetylcysteine play in the nervous system?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

N-acetylcysteine can cross the brain-blood barrier, and can chemically be a precursor for glutathione, the main free radical scavenger of the central nervous system. Oral glutathione cannot cross the BBB, and cysteine causes too much G.I. toxicity to be tolerated. NAC also can lower levels of homocysteine in the body.
